Simple and strong

Extruded shows its design through a strong, vertical presence. Different sizes, mounting options and colour combinations allow the luminaire to adapt to a wide range of architectural interiors.

The result is a minimal pendant lighting design that can function as both a lighting element and an architectural feature. Behind this simplicity lies a complex engineering process. Creating a slender yet functional structure required close collaboration between designer, engineers and manufacturing experts.

It was the ribs

The starting point for Extruded came from an unexpected source. Designer Alain Gilles noticed the ribbed cardboard often used by architects for architectural mock-ups. The vertical ribs caught the daylight in a distinctive way, creating a rhythm of light and shadow. Translating this effect into a lighting product required careful development.

Achieving the right shape and sharpness of the ribs demanded extensive testing. This led to an intensive collaboration between the designer, Modular engineers and an extrusion specialist to refine the design.

  • Slim and elegant

Maintaining a slim and elegant profile was essential to the design of Extruded. The diameter of the shaft was carefully determined based on the size of the reflector. This ensured sufficient space for ventilation while preserving the slender architectural appearance of the luminaire.

The driver was also positioned outside the luminaire body. This reinforced Alain's aspiration to create an elegant architectural element.

    Cone of light

At the lower end of the luminaire, a distinctive cone completes the design of Extruded. The flood reflector creates a well-defined, wide beam of light that forms a controlled zone of illumination. The sharp edge of the cone shapes the beam precisely. At the same time, the light reflects on the inside of the cone, producing a gentle glow on the carefully brushed aluminium surface.

Extruded consists of two other distinctive design elements: the hook and the combination of two cables. One cable supplies power, while the second steel cable supports the luminaire through the hook. This custom suspension detail adds a playful design gesture that echoes the drop-shaped hook wrapping around the cable.

Stripped to the essence

Extruded Stripped soon followed the original design. We removed the cone and designed a special front ring. Its sloped curve catches the reflector's light beautifully. Combined with a prismatic diffuser, this design produces a softer and more homogeneous light beam.

  • Two-in-one cable

For Extruded Stripped, the suspension design was simplified further. Instead of two separate cables, the luminaire is held by a single smooth cable that integrates both suspension and power supply. We chose a more flexible cable to ensure the luminaire hangs perfectly straight while maintaining the clean vertical line of the design.

What is Extruded lighting?

Extruded is an architectural pendant luminaire designed by Alain Gilles for Modular Lighting Instruments. The design combines a strong vertical form with precise light control, creating a distinctive lighting element for contemporary interiors.

What type of lighting is Extruded?

Extruded is a suspended architectural lighting fixture designed for interior spaces. Its vertical design and reflector create a defined cone of light while maintaining a minimal and elegant appearance.

What makes the design of Extruded unique?

Extruded was inspired by the ribbed cardboard used in architectural models. The vertical rib structure influences how light interacts with the surface, creating a subtle rhythm of light and shadow.

What is the difference between Extruded and Extruded Stripped?

Extruded features a distinctive cone reflector that shapes the beam of light. Extruded Stripped removes the cone and replaces it with a specially designed ring and prismatic diffuser, producing a softer and more homogeneous light distribution.
