• We believe the most sustainable product is the one that lasts. That's why, next to reducing environmental impact, we make sure every luminaire sustains its lifespan and beyond. To achieve this, Modular lives by two basic principles. One defines the designing process and the other focuses on aftercare and updates.

Compliance and support

We take responsibility seriously. That’s why Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) are available to download on every product page. These documents give you precise, independently verified insights into our products’ environmental impact, from raw materials to end-of-life.

Designed to last

Whenever we add new objects to the world, we want to ensure they bring quality, pleasure and improvement, rather than become a burden. That's where the critical mindset and smart design solutions come into play.

✓ Radical modularity

✓ Strict standards

✓ Designed for disassembly

What happens at the end?

1/ Radical modularity

Beyond great design, we envision our products within their broader contexts — how they fit into interiors and how they can avoid the landfill altogether. That’s why we enter the design process with a critical mindset, asking ‘why’ five times before approaching the drawing board.

The goal is to avoid adding new components unless it’s truly justified, keeping things modular at all times. The 5 Whys technique is not just a strategic memo tucked away in a designer’s drawer; it’s a valuable tool that helps us develop new products and, most of all, expand the existing product families.

1. Why we develop this luminaire?

2. Why do we use this part?

3. Why do we use this material?

4. Why don't we give this component a double function?

5. Why do we develop a new tool?

Minude: The philosophy of modularity applied

Take a look at Minude, a staple in our catalogue. It all began with a simple ceiling luminaire. As the product family grew, the 5 Whys principles guided the creation of each new variant. We retained the core components, adding only what was truly necessary. Less production, less waste, more efficiency. And this principle applies to 64% of products in our portfolio.

Modularity = flexibility

Next to lowering the impact of our products, the radical approach to modularity opens vast customisation possibilities. From colours and finishes to temperature and beam angles, we can easily respond to the specific needs of our customers with made-to-order solutions.

Higher expectations, lower impact

2/ Strict standards

We set the bar high for product quality and energy efficiency by looking into technologies that can indirectly reduce the energy consumption. This includes dimmable drivers, sensors and optical systems.

To reduce failures and expand product lifespan, we set higher standards for our temperature tests. The emitted temperature of all our LEDs must be 10% lower than the maximum specified by the supplier. This ensures our products last a lifetime and beyond, proven with less than 0,25% of product failures in the market.

Leave no trace

3/ Designed for disassembly

By making our luminaires easy to disassemble at the end of their life, we ensure their parts can be easily repaired, refurbished and recycled.

No glues, tapes and potted materials (like epoxy or resin) has a significant advantage: the electronic components can be easily separated, inspected, repaired or replaced without damage to the object.

Using standardised and interchangeable components like LED modules, drivers or connectors allows for easy replacements when a component fails or becomes obsolete. This supports upgradability, for instance to a newer, more efficient LED module. Our luminaires share 83% of components across different product families, radically limiting component overproduction.

Repair and refurbish

Our commitment to quality and longevity doesn’t stop at the design phase. After our luminaires leave the warehouse, we maintain a warm relationship with the products and their new owners. Not that we see each other often — quite the opposite. But we are always available for repairs and refurbishments that help the luminaires live a longer life.

Repair

1/ Aftersales

We go against the throwaway mindset by offering the repair service. We guarantee the availability of parts and components for minimum 15 years, so that there’s no doubt we can fix even a teenage luminaire. And that’s really just the minimum. Modular’s repair service has been active for more than 25 years, sometimes welcoming pieces that now could hold vintage status. In 2024 alone, we restored 2,295 fixtures.

Refurbish and upgrade

2/ Products

We upgrade our products to newer standards, giving them another life when new technologies appear. So far, 30% of our portfolio received such a refresh.

The evolution of LED technology, the undisputed hero of energy-efficient lighting, is a great example. Whenever new LED technology becomes available, we gradually upgrade our products. Take a recent update to V8 Bridgelux LEDs within our Smart product family which has increased efficacy by 20 lm/W. This translates to about 20-30% more light for the same amount of energy used.

Refurbish and upgrade

3/ On location

The luminaires that are already installed on location can also count on an upgrade, including full project refurbishments. An outstanding example is the upgrade of 1.6 km of our SLD75 luminaire lines to LED technology in a Belgian hospital. We retained the aluminium bases and endplates and worked with the existing installation. This refurbishment not only prolonged the products' life but also helped the hospital avoid extensive construction work. The luminaires were updated without the need for a costly renovation or tearing down the ceiling.
